Will reduction of salt in diet help lower my blood
pressure?
There is now strong evidence that reducing salt
in diet can slightly lower high blood pressure. The recommended salt
intake in adults in the USA is about 2,400 mg/day- which is about I teaspoon. Unfortunately
the average American takes in twice the amount. Most current data indicate that
consumers should be taking in 1,200 mg of sodium or less. Over time, you will
see gradual lowering of your blood pressure. However, you need to understand
that not all causes of blood pressure are salt sensitive. In some patients,
reduction of salt may make no difference to your blood pressure-a fact which is often not mentioned.
