Cefuroxime for Lyme Disease

Is cefuroxime axetil a safe drug for Lyme disease?

Yes, it is a relatively safe drug. It has been around for more than 2 decades. The dose is 500 mg twice a day for 14-20 days. However, Cefuroxime axetil is not a cheap medication and I would recommend you only take it if you have not responded to doxycycline or amoxicillin. The duration of treatment of Lyme disease with this drug depends on the start of your symptoms and presence of neurological involvement. Anecdotal reports indicate that it works in some people but not in others. Some people with Lyme Disease continue to have residual symptoms despite long term treatment.
