Ayurvedic Medicine for Diabetes

Can I use ayurvedic medicine to treat my diabetes?

Sure you can. We live in a free country. I am not an expert in the field of ayurvedic medicine and my knowledge base is bare. But I do know that there are certain herbs used by these practitioners that can lower blood sugars. Use of Diabecon, Inoiter and Cogent DB have been shown to lower blood sugars- that is if you believe what is published in the Indian medical literature. There are also several pancreas tonics used for diabetic which are reported to lower blood sugars.

Ayurvedic providers also encourage patients with diabetes to make changes in their diet, incorporate exercise and alter their lifestyle. So it is not know what is the real contributing factor when it comes to lowering of blood sugars.

To recommend these herbs to you is difficult because there are no randomized trials that have compared these treatments to what is available in the USA. You are free to try them but I would monitor the blood sugars closely. If you do not see any difference in 2-4 weeks, then I guess these herbs do not work. If your sugars do drop, then continue.

The major problem with analyzing literature on herbs is that the articles are often written by the providers/manufacturers and hence, there is a possibility of bias. If you were my patient in America, I would recommend you lose weight, discontinue smoking, watch your diet and use medications that are available in the USA.  I do not have much faith in herbs-simply my own personal experience. But you are free to choose what ever you want.
