No insurance companies are not stupid. When they know that a procedure is high risk and fraught with complications, they will not cover it. this also applies to Medicare. Experimental and cosmetic procedures are also usually not covered by most insurance plans. In fact many bariatric procedures are not covered by most insurance plans. If they are, you can rest assured you will be paying a high co-pay fee. Some of these plans may make you sign a waiver that you are on your own if their is a F..k up in surgery.
