Pink eye treatment

Is a pink eye due to bacteria treated with oral or topical antibiotics?

Pink eye is easy to treat. The majority of cases of pink eye can be treated at home without complications. For most bacterial cases, antibiotic drops are effective cures for pink eye. The antibiotic usually has to be applied twice a day and in most cases, the pink eye disappears in 2-3 days. There are also antibiotic ointments instead of eye drops.

Ointments are generally used in children and infants with a pink eye. The reason is that ointments are a lot easier to apply then eye drops in young people and children. Unlike eye drops, ointments may also blur or smudge the vision for 10-20 minutes.

Irrespective of the treatment, most patients see a resolution of their symptoms in 48 hours. However, doctors advise it is best to complete the entire prescription dose even if the symptoms disappear within 2 days.
