Pink eye

How contagious is a pink eye infection?

Data from young children indicate that viruses can be easily transmitted in 40%-60% of cases with skin contact or from touching contaminated items. Unlike viruses, bacteria are less easily transmitted by inanimate objects but readily transmitted by aerosol droplets and close contact with the effect individual. The individual can only pass bacteria when there is a frank eye discharge.

When one has a pink eye, it is essential to keep all personal care products separate. Even the eye drops should be used with care. The tip of the dropper should not be contaminated with the fingers or the eyes. Moreover, all eye products should be discarded after the pink eye has resolved.
